Make some new perfect and brilliant summer towels.

Enjoying the summer? Any fun summer plans? Mine is turning out to be rather creative and magical but I’m seriously wishing I had a warm lovely summer like last year…    I just upgraded my beach towel and added a secret little pocket.

Away with the old boring towel and welcome cool, new exotic towel. Maybe  this DIY project can inspire you. Use some of your magic and be the star on the beach this summer. It will make a great statement!

Today’s post is vacation inspired and  I am talking about how I upgrade the towels. For those of you on a budget this is super duper for getting the ultra-lux feeling for free.

summer secret

Usually I worry about my phone and money when I am on a public beach. For a year now I been try to figure out how to keep the valuables safe in a clever way. For some time I was thinking “Why don’t  sun hats come with a pocket inside?” so I was thinking of making one. The problem with this idea is that when you go swimming, you can’t dive and you have to swim like an old lady with your head up out of the water. That is certainly not for me.

The sun! The sea! The colour of the sea was just so pretty. We had a wonderful time.
I have heard about sun lotion bottles that have a secret place for valueables, that is pretty clever.  But this towel idea came from me when I was colouring my hair.  I wasn’t careful and made huge ugly stains on one of my towels. And I have to admit – it wasn’t the first time it happened. Upcycling is my thing, so I had to do something, but what?

Another advantage of my beach towel, the sand does not get stick to it so after a quick shake – I lie down and the sand does not stick to me

 Creativity process

The creativity process starts like this: First questions, What are all the things we can use towels for? One thing is to bring them to the beach……….. So then I thought, what if I cover them with some old fabric? Maybe then they will look fabulous?

I could use some beautiful Africa fabrics that I bought in Uganda some years ago. The idea about the secret pocket came like lightning from the sky. OOOOO yea I just love, LOVE when this kick happens. I had finely solved the problem!  Is´t this why we keep creating things?

You need a towel and some cotton fabrics that are bigger than the towel (cotton scarves or a couple of meters of remnants). I used two different fabrics to make a contrast and pump it up a little. And it will be easier to remember where you have the pocket. I didn’t put a zipper in, or a button, but I will do it the next time. I will  go for the zipper. But, if you are not familiar with sewing zippers, don’t worry, you are going to be happy just to have the pocket.

Great Little Cabin Out in the Woods

kylles norwegian cottage

When we borrow a cabin from our friends, they leave us the key or tell us where the key is hidden. They expect you to be honest, and to clean really well after you, so that its nice for the next people coming to stay.
The cabin can be empty for weeks, so, when we go in, the first thing we do is to light the fire. We will often sit in silence in front of the fire place, watching the wood light up, bringing light and warmth to the cabin. Then we light the candles to give some more warm light and chat as we make ourselves at home. The fire place can be the only source of heat, so we all wear woollen underwear, and have lots of home knitted, thick, warm, woollen socks. There will be socks for everyone including the guests. In summer, as in winter we love cuddle a round the fire, drinking hot chocolate and eating home made waffles with homemade jam.  It has to be made from berries that you picked yourself in the forest around the cabin and you have to make it yourself, or you will be teased, and you can be the laughing stock for years. We love to eat waffles and jam, but picking berries, plums and apples for making jam and making all the waffles for 5 or 10 people, is hard work and  takes time, but is is fun when everybody helps. The real Norwegian cabins are characterised by 4 or more of the things on this list.
  • no electricity
  • no hot water
  • no shower
  • no TV
  • outside toilet
  • lots of old books and magazines
  • a nice fire place
  • bunk beds
  • lots of woollen sweaters and socks
  • cards, and board games such as ludo, yatzi, monopoly, checkers and chess
  • a visitors´ book
  • a poster of the Norwegian king (But, only on the wall in the outside toilet)

The cabin must certainly be painted red or brown.

Most of them are painted red (like the one in the picture),  but the mountain cabins are often brown. The white is often used for luxury equipped summer houses, but you will find some white cabins in the very south of Norway.

Electric shock treatment?

There will be no internet access and, in my friend´s cabin, you have to climb to the top of a nearby hill to get a signal for your mobile phone. After I spent a week or two, I feel so relaxed and feel so normal. I spend no time thinking about work, or answering emails or being on any social media. When I need to bathe and wash my hair, plunging into the cold lake can be like old style electric shock therapy. It feels so cold but afterwards I feel so strong and healthy and refreshed.

Preparing and cooking the food and washing up afterwards brings us closer together. For a few days or weeks we are completely removed from the stress and strain of the city life. We concentrate on what is REALLY important, family, friends, sharing food and experiences. We talk about funny things that happened before, about what is going on in our lives, and of course  our new the plans.

No wonder I feel so charged, relax, relieved and ready for the city life.

Here is my best friend, Janne, it is her family that is so hospitable and lets us stay to paint pictures and write for as long as we need. The best cabins stay in the family for generations.

Easter craft it is DIY time

happy easter magny courses

Easter here in Norway is the world’s longest Easter holiday. It´s a time to go skiing in the mountain and stay all day long outdoor in the fresh air, or  to relax with family and friends in a cabin just talking, reading crime novels and playing Yahtzee.

Other people  including my mom,  like to stay home and spend some time gardening. The winter is over so Easter is a good opportunity to tidy up the plants and shrubs and get the garden ready for spring and summer.

This year I will go to my friend’s cabin which is near the city and there is no snow (yippie!).  I will make the Easter breakfast which will include eggs – boiled, scrambled, fried. The boiled eggs will of course be painted before we all sit down and eat together. One of the  DIY activities we will be doing is to drain the eggs and paint them, and this must be the number one  DIY activity among grown-ups and childrenat Easter.

Chickens, Easter eggs, (and sometimes Easter bunnies) are symbols for Easter. Yellow is the color for Easter so therefor I have painted my tray yellow so that it will bring out the colours of my exotic flowers and to lighten up my living room.

Easter eggs decor

Here I am using some wooden eggs that I found in the store. I suppose anything will do. I am looking farward to give these eggs as a present, so I am going to make them last for years, much longer than real eggs.
First I opened a book that I love for some inspiration,
and then I Googled for some pictures of pussy willows.

I like using pencil before I paint or draw. Then I start to paint using acrylic and watercolours.. After the paint is dry, I use a permanent pen to outline everything.

I do the final details in different colors using the Posca pen.

I been testing watercolours from Jane Davenport and i really like them. The Peerless Transparent Watercolours come in sheet form and i never seen anything like it. See more on youtube

IKEA hack, How to make a nice gift box.

ikea hackIKEA hack Personalising the gift box. Materials: RYSSBY 2014

I’m always looking for new fun ways to wrap a gifts. This time I was inspired to try out drawing on these black box with my POSCA pens. all you need to do is to have a pen that can draw on black. And find something you want to draw, it can be done quite easily. if you do not know how to draw, drawing zigzag or circles, or write a poem.

Occasionally I come across something I just have to have, this time it was my mother who had been at IKEA and found an offer 3 boxes in one package.

Giving away a gift box that is decorated, is a gift in itself.
